Freescale Semiconductor Inc. said on August 9, 2004 it is the first manufacturer to receive federal approval for its ultrawideband (UWB) communications chipset.

The Federal Communications Commission certified Freescale's XS110 chipset and will begin shipments of the UWB product immediately. The chipsets can be designed into consumer electronics applications sold in the U.S.

Martin Rofheart, director of UWB operations for Freescale, said UWB products using Freescale's technology should be on U.S. retailers shelves by as early as the holiday season.

The chipset uses the direct-sequence UWB approach, which is one of two leading candidates for the IEEE 802.15.3 standard for high-speed wireless personal area networks. The Freescale chipset achieves over 110Mbps data rates.
