Semtech International AG, a provider of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors, announced the expansion of its MicroClamp family of ultra-small transient voltage suppressors (TVSs).

Providing designers with easily implemented solutions for protection of critical circuits in cellphones, PDAs, digital music players and other portable electronic devices from electrostatic discharge (ESD), the three new multi-line members of the MicroClamp family are the ?Clamp0504A with protection for up to four unidirectional lines, the ?Clamp0505A with protection for up to five unidirectional lines or four bidirectional lines, and the ?Clamp0506A with protection for up to five bidirectional lines. Each TVS offers an ESD protection in excess of 8kV contact and 15kV air per IEC 61000-4-2 level 4 requirements.

"Today's generation of portable electronics get their performance from controllers, processors and ASICs made ever smaller by the advances in process technology, which also makes them more vulnerable to an electrostatic surge," explained Tom Dugan, the company's Director of Protection Products. "These circuits are hard to protect from ESD given the space challenges, which is why our MicroClamp family, with its low clamping voltage and small size, has been so successful."

Low clamping voltage levels plus small package size

According to a press statement from Semtech, all of its MicroClamp devices feature a unique combination of low clamping voltage levels and small package size which allows them to protect even the most sensitive CMOS circuits while minimizing the board space consumed. The TVSs are placed in between the protected circuit and the sources of potential ESD, and during an ESD event, they become a low-impedance path protecting the circuit by diverting harmful current to ground.

With its 1.7-by-1.7-by-0.6mm, six-lead SC-89 (SOT-666) package, the new products occupy roughly half as much board space as competing solutions in industry standard SC-70 package. The company shared that were able to produce a compact footprint because of its proprietary manufacturing process that maintains clamping characteristics in a smaller package.

All of the MicroClamp multi-line products are already available in production quantities. The ?Clamp0504A (order code uClamp0504A.TCT) is priced at 25 cents, the ?Clamp0505A (order code uClamp0505A.TCT) at 26 cents, and the ?Clamp0506A (order code uClamp0506A.TCT) at 28 cents. All prices are for 1,000-piece quantities.
