Zoran Corp., a fabless chip company with a background in digital graphics and imaging chips, has formed a partnership with Falanx Microsystems AS, a licensor of graphics processing cores for mobile applications, Zoran said on August 10, 2004.

Zoran said it would implement 3D imaging processing technology from Falanx in multimedia application processors for mobile phones. The integration would be based on Falanx's Mali100 2D, 3D hardware acceleration engine.

Falanx recently closed a $3 million first round of venture capital finance with Selvaag Venture Capital and Alliance Venture. The money would be used to enable Falanx to develop its presence in the US and continue R&D into 3D graphics technology.

Falanx was founded in April 2001 and the Mali100 3D Accelerator IP Core has been commercially available for mobile and automotive SoC makers since the third quarter of 2003, the company said. Falanx is working to embed the core into an ARM-based SoC. The final product will be available for selected handset manufacturers in 2005, Falanx said.
