Mitsubishi Electric Corp. will expand production of photovoltaic cells and modules at its Nakatsugawa and Kyoto Works plants by April 2005, following several Japanese competitors trying to carve out a stake in the growing photovoltaic market.

Mitsubishi plans to invest 3.3 billion yen (roughly $30 million) to enlarge both the Nakatsugawa and Kyoto Works plants to increase annual production capacity from 90MW to 135MW by next April. By April 2006, the company expects to be able to produce 230 MW of photovoltaic cells annually.

Increasing global efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions are stimulating sales of photovoltaic products, particularly in Japan which accounted for 364MW of the total 742MW produced last year, according to market estimates.

Earlier this month, Kyocera Solar, a subsidiary of Kyocera, said it would begin mass production of photovoltaic modules in Mexico. Another Japanese company, Sharp Electronics, announced it would market lighting products combining solar cells and light emitting diodes beginning next month in Japan.
