SigmaTel Inc. has licensed the 32bit ARM9-based core for its next-generation multimedia controller chip solution for 2005 portable multimedia player designs. SigmaTel chose to license the ARM926EJ-S core which includes a memory management unit (MMU).

The MMU complements SigmaTel's SoC strategy by providing consumer electronics developers more flexibility in their product designs, flexibility in what kind of memory can be used to interface to new products, and flexibility with which operating system can be used, both now and in the future. This particular core also includes ARM's DSP extensions. This feature will allow SigmaTel to continue to provide low power digital audio controller products, yet also provide the additional processing power needed for higher-end applications.
