The global router market dipped by 2 percent in the second quarter, the first drop following five quarters of revenue growth, a market research firm said on August 19, 2004. Revenue for the quarter was $1.72 billion, compared with $1.75 billion the first quarter, the Dell'Oro Group said.

The quarter-to-quarter decline was due to a "slightly weaker" corporate market, Dell'Oro analyst Shin Umeda said. Businesses appeared to have cutback on network expansions and upgrades.

Revenue from high-performance routers, however, increased by 13 percent to $260 million, Dell'Oro said. Telecommunications and Internet service providers manage and carry traffic using the 10-gigabit per second routers.

The market leaders in the high-end router segment were Cisco Systems, Juniper Networks and Avici Networks, in that order.
