EM Microelectronic, an electronic systems company of the Swatch Group, introduced a low-voltage, low-power RISC microcontroller (MCU) that features four high-current I/Os and the equivalent of 4KB ROM, and operates on a 32kHz crystal.

The outputs of the EM6607 MCU can drive up to 30mA at 3V with 500mV dropout voltage, making it a suitable choice for driving stepping motors, LEDs, TRIACs, external EEPROM and busses. It can also serve as a sophisticated power supply for other devices in the system.

"The EM6607 has a 32kHz crystal external oscillator for the system designer who needs high-accuracy," shared Mougahed Darwish, president of the management board of EM Micro. "Instead of using a conventional crystal, one can also connect a TCXO such as the EM7602 on the external clock pin of the EM6607 in order to obtain a -0.012ppm/C? highly accurate, temperature compensated system."

Reduced overall system cost

The new MCU operates from a single 1.2V to 3.6V power supply, and consumes 1.8?A (in active mode) and 0.3?A (in stand-by mode) when operating at 32kHz and a supply of 1.5V. The company said the device integrates a unique combination of features into a versatile, low-power device that eliminates external components and reduces the overall cost of systems.

The EM6607 can be used in systems requiring sensor interfaces, RF or IR control, motor driving or a general form of timekeeping. Target applications include security systems, domestic appliances, remote controls, bicycle computers, and industrial timers, watches and clocks.

The device executes 72 basic instructions and its data size is 4bit-wide. Other features include 4 inputs, 16 outputs (up to 4 high current), 2,048 x 16 mask ROM, 96 x 4 bit RAM, reset outputs, two 8bit timers, two 4bit BCD counters, a 3bit event counter, a prescaler with 1Hz resolution, a serial port, 12 interrupts, a watchdog timer and three software-programmable voltage level detectors. It is available in 24-pin and 28-pin TSSOP and SO, and in die form to facilitate ultra-high density system packaging.
