Shipments of plasma display panels reached 799,000 units during the second quarter, up 14 percent from the previous quarter but falling 43,000 units short of expectations, according to market research firm DisplaySearch.

In its Quarterly PDP Shipment and Forecast, the firm noted that competition from microdisplay rear projection TVs in North America contributed to the demand shortfall. This caused plasma display panel and plasma display TV unit prices to fall faster than expected as inventories began to build, exacerbated by additional fab capacity coming online.

DisplaySearch expects falling prices and holiday season demand to produce a 26 percent rise in plasma display shipments the third quarter, topping one million units.

The report said Matsushita overtook Samsung as the leading plasma display supplier, capturing 23.1 percent of market revenue as the company saw strong demand and ramped up production lines in Ibaraki, Japan and Shanghai. Matsushita was the fourth leading supplier the previous quarter.

In terms of panel sizes, 42 in. enhanced definition panels accounted for 54 percent of unit shipments the second quarter, up from 49 percent the previous quarter, the report said.
