Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) announced that they have developed the industry's first quad delta-sigma modulator featuring 100dB dynamic range, 16-bit resolution and a single 5V supply.

The four differential inputs enable direct connection to transducers or low-level signals for measuring and digitizing current in industrial environments, such as motor control and industrial process control.

"The integration of four independent modulators featuring high accuracy, high resolution and low noise allows customers to precisely measure three-phase motor currents and a dc-link voltage simultaneously, thereby improving system-level performance," shared Miroslav Oljaca, strategic marketing manager for TI's motor control converter products.

With the appropriate digital filter and modulator rate, the ADS1204 can be used to achieve 16-bit analog-to-digital conversion with no missing codes. For higher speed measurements, effective resolution of 12 bits can be obtained with a digital filter bandwidth of 160kHz at a modulator rate of 10MHz. Additionally, the device also offers &plusmn1LSB integral nonlinearity (INL), 1LSB differential nonlinearity (DNL), 0.5 percent gain error, onboard 20MHz oscillator and four input reference buffers.

Meanwhile, the ADS1203 is a single-channel delta-sigma modulator with 95dB dynamic range, 16-bit resolution and a single 5V supply. It offers a 250mV input range to directly digitize current passing through current shunt resistors, and with an appropriate current shunt resistor, it is possible to measure the motor drive output current up to 70A (RMS).

An effective resolution of 14 bits can be obtained with a digital filter bandwidth of 40kHz at a modulator rate of 10MHz. Other features of the ADS1203 include a 1LSB integral nonlinearity (INL), 1LSB differential nonlinearity (DNL), 1 percent gain error and a flexible serial interface with four different modes.

Extending the company's Burr-Brown product line of motor control converters, the ADS1204 and ADS1203 are already both available from TI and its authorized distributors. The ADS1204 is packaged in a QFN-32 (5-by-5mm) and has prices starting at $6.75. The ADS1203 is housed in a TSSOP-8, with prices starting at $2.70. Both quotes are for 1,000-unit quantities.
