Programmable logic device vendor Xilinx Inc. has created two divisions within its organizational structure; a DSP division under Omid Tahernia and an embedded processing division led by Mark Aaldering, the company said Sept. 6.

Tahernia joins Xilinx from Motorola where he served in a variety of positions in the semiconductor and equipment sectors. He will take up the position of vice president and general manager Xilinx's DSP division. Aaldering has spent the last five years as vice president of Xilinx's intellectual property division and will now manage the embedded processing division.

Tahernia's task is to broaden the reach of Xilinx FPGAs into the $2 billion market for signal processing traditionally served by ASICs and ASSPs rather than traditional DSPs.

"Tahernia is the kind of visionary leader and proven performer we need to move Xilinx's DSP team and business forward. His DSP domain and end-market expertise will be extremely valuable in developing high performance DSP solutions targeted at wireless, video and imaging, and aerospace and defense applications," said Wim Roelandts, Xilinx president and chief executive officer, in statement.
