South Korea leads Taiwan in TFT-LCD panel shipment

Manufacturers of TFT\LCD in Taiwan, such as AU Optronics Corp. (AUO), Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO), Chunghwa Picture Tubes Ltd and HannStar Display Corp., shipped 14.7 million large-size panels in the second quarter of this year. The shipment volume is modestly lower than that of South Korea, which shipped 14.73 million units, according to Taiwan's Photonics Industry and Technology Development Association (PIDA).

AUO and CMO had about 1 percent share in the large-size panel market due to their rapid increase in capacity at their 5G plants.

Taiwan's market share rose from 38.1 percent in the first quarter to 41.4 percent in the second quarter, with a total of 35.3 million units in overseas shipment, which is about the same share as that of South Korea. Meanwhile, PIDA reports that the market share of Japanese makers declined from 17.8 percent to 17.2 percent.

However, PIDA expects Taiwan's shipment volume to decrease. Production output declined from 4.97 million units in May to 4.93 million in June and further down to 4.63 million in July.
