Applied Micro Circuits Corp. has opened a technology center here with a staff of about 25 engineers, and will add another 10 by year's end.

The San Diego-based company declined to reveal the amount of its investment.

Called AMCC Technology Solutions India Pvt. Ltd, the subsidiary is headed by Raju Pudota, who serves as managing director. Pudota was previously with IBM and HCL in India.

Initially, the center will house IC verification teams for the cell and packet processing, framer and storage area networking groups. It will handle IC design and software development.

"We believe there is an emerging demand in our wide-area network business, and this new technology solutions center allows us to expand cautiously, in the most strategic and cost-effective manner possible," said Ramakrishna R. Sudireddy, AMCC's senior vice president of engineering.

"We are seeing increased demand from customers in areas such as software development. In the verification space, we are continuing to try to deliver silicon at a lower price point," Sudireddy added.

AMCC's center here allows it to shift work from its existing overseas contract employees to full-time staff. The center represents 5 percent of the company's work force.
