SigmaTel GoChip controllers support Renesas, Toshiba

SigmaTel Inc. has disclosed that its STBD2011 GoChip USB flash drive controllers support Renesas Technology's MLC AG-AND and Toshiba Corp's MLC NAND flash, providing substantial improvements in storage density and system cost.

By storing multiple bits of information in a single memory cell, MLC flash provides more capacity in a similar silicon area when compared with single level cell (SLC, one bit per cell) technology and therefore supports lower system costs.

SigmaTel claims that the GoChip products implement hardware error correction circuitry (ECC), improving the reliability of data stored in MLC flash without sacrificing performance. The growing popularity of storage-hungry applications, such as USB flash (thumb) drives, has created a demand for flash memory with larger capacities.

"SigmaTel's support for Renesas AG-AND flash technology products provide the cost and density benefits offered by MLC, while offering improved performance over standard SLC NAND flash," said Haruji Ishihara, department manager, memory product marketing dept. and manager of worldwide memory product marketing of Renesas.

Brian Kumagai, business development manager, NAND Flash for Toshiba America Electronic Components Inc., added, "In a recent study of MLC NAND Flash performance based on typical files sizes for Microsoft Office documents, Toshiba found that the MLC NAND Flash performance is more than sufficient to satisfy today's consumer and business users of USB Flash Drives."
