Consuming low power, the new 20bit stereo A/D and D/A converter from Asahi Kasei Microsystems Co. Ltd (AKM) is designed to meet the latest trends in portable audio and AV system devices.

With its advanced low 1.6V performance, the new AK4555 is suitable for various portable audio and video devices such as MP3 players and digital video recorders, which are smaller and much more power-efficient than their predecessors.

Succeeding the AK4550, a 2.5V low power-consuming 16-bit A/D and D/A converter, the AK4555 has an audio I/F with I2S format. A second version, AK4554 will also be released shortly, which will be compatible with the AK4550. These new A/D and D/A converters utilize the company's enhanced dual-bit delta-sigma architecture and advanced multi-bit architecture. Excellent anti-jitter characteristics are provided by switched capacitor technology, AKM added.

In addition to the normal clock modes ( 256fs, 384fs, 512fs and 768fs), the master clock supports 1024fs, which improves noise outside of the band at a sampling rate of up to 25kHz, and sound quality when sampling at low speed.

The AK4555 is offered in a 16-pin TSSOP package. Evaluation boards and samples are already available.
