Wipro Technologies has announced the availability of IEEE 802.17-compliant resilient packet ring (RPR) for Intel's IXP2XXX line of network processors.
The solution includes an integrated data plane and control plane components implemented on the processors and Wipro claims it makes more efficient use of SONET/SDH ring bandwidth when transporting data.
Applications include metro optical and Ethernet products to enable efficient transport of Ethernet over existing infrastructure. The RPR offers a sub-50ms restoration time after failures and up to eight times oversubscription of the network under certain conditions.
"Service providers are increasingly looking at deploying RPR in their networks. The introduction of our RPR solution strengthens our offerings in Layer 2/3 technologies," said D. Chandrasekar, vice president of Wipro's optical networks unit.
"Wipro's RPR implementation on the Intel IXP2XXX network processor microarchitecture helps our customers customize and implement metro network platforms that provision new services," said Frank Schapfel, marketing manager for Intel's network processor products.
Wipro Technologies, the software arm of Wipro Ltd., is an associate member of the Intel Communications Alliance.
