Xignal Technologies AG will introduce a CMOS XFI library element with optional limiting amp this week for designers that wish to use the XFI interface for both the optical and electrical side of an XFP transceiver module.

The XFI interface, even with the limiting-amp block, measures 4 mm2 and offers a typical power consumption of 350mW, the company said.

Many customers may only use the XFI block for the electrical interface within a signal-conditioning IC, said Holger Hoeltke, VP of marketing at Xignal. But the XFI element has an embedded limiting amp, so two blocks can be mirrored within a single IC, using one block to interface with the electrical connector in an XFP transceiver module and one to interface with a transimpedance amp and laser diode driver on the optical side.

The XFI core, available for integration with IC designs immediately, joins a family of Xignal 10Gb cores that also include transceivers, standalone limiting amps and laser diode drivers.
