Supertex IC enables the design of highly efficient power supplies

Supertex Inc. has developed a high frequency power supply controller IC that utilizes the advantages of active-clamp converter topologies. Supertex said the HV9608 IC allows engineers to design highly efficient (well above 90 percent) power supplies for single-ended converters in off-line or dc-dc applications.

The new chip utilizes peak current-mode control with a programmable current slope compensation feature that allows for converter designs beyond 50 percent duty cycle, while achieving higher performance. It integrates many common functions that typically require numerous external components, the company boasted. These functions include a 250V start up regulator, a soft-start, a UV lockout with programmable hysteresis, a cycle-by-cycle current limit with "hiccup" mode, and a 2MHz error amplifier. The operating frequency is programmable from 25kHz to 800kHz, which allows single-ended converters to be designed for small footprints and overall size, without sacrificing performance and efficiency.

The HV9608 also features Volt-Second clamp control, which is a needed function in active-clamp topologies. Additionally, it has an independent programming of dead-times between the switch transitions, which is optimized for Zero-Voltage switching to provide maximum efficiency.

"The high operating frequency capability and the space-saving TSSOP-16 package, combined with the other integrated functions, make the HV9608 the ideal PWM controller for low power bricks and board mount converters to 100W," commented Applications Manager Alex Mednik.

The HV9608TS (in the TSSOP-16 package) is priced at $1.90 each in 1,000-unit orders. A demo board, HV9608DB1, is also available and can be purchased for $100.
