TSMC claims lead in 0.13-micron, low-k production

Taiwan Semiconductor Mfg Co. Ltd said that it has cumulatively produced and shipped more than one million 8-inch equivalent wafers with circuits made using 0.13?m processing. The company added that this placed it in "the forefront" of foundry production at this manufacturing node.

In addition, TSMC claimed that no other dedicated foundries are shipping 0.13?m wafers employing low-k dielectric material. "TSMC is the only dedicated foundry to provide 0.13? low-k production, accounting for 100 percent of the foundry segment's low-k output at that node," the company said in a statement.

The 0.13?m technology node represents 25 percent of TSMC's revenues for the second quarter of 2004 and contributed nearly $500 million revenue, the company said.

TSMC's 0.13?m technology is in production at Fab 6, which runs 8-inch wafers, and Fab 12, which runs 12-inch wafers. Both fabs are now fully loaded. To support continued demand, TSMC is now ramping 0.13?m production in Fab 14, the company's second 12-inch fab.
