Supply, demand of 17-inch monitor panels to even out

Another 15 percent decline was expected for prices of 17-inch monitor panels before year-end as LG.Philips LCD Co. Ltd dropped its price for LCD monitor panels to $190.

However, C.C. Liu, Sales and Marketing Vice President of Chung Hwa Picture Tubes Ltd (CPT) states that it is unlikely that prices will continue to drop in October since the current price of Taiwan-made panels are also around $190.

Prices may have been on the downturn since July but the holiday season may bring in an increased demand in the global market, so the market is expected to balance off its supply. In addition, HannStar Display Corp. has switched to producing 19-inch LCD monitor panels and 23-inch LCD TVs so there is no expected additional production to oversupply the market for the time being.

In addition, Michael Wang, project manager of the industry & technology research division for the Taiwan-based Photonics Industry & Technology Development Association (PIDA) stated that overseas shipments for LCD TVs may reach 16 million units in 2005, further decreasing the inventories of panel makers.
