RF Micro Devices is blaming lower than expected demand from some Asian handset makers for significantly reduced sales and a projected loss for the current quarter.

The company now expects revenues for the quarter ended September to decline sequentially from the quarter ended June 30 by about eight to twelve percent, or $146 million to $152.5 million.

In July, it forecast quarterly revenue of about $166 million.

The company said it expects sales to increase for the third quarter in all its business units cellular, wireless connectivity and infrastructure but it would not give a specific target.

Bob Bruggeworth, RF Micro CEO commented: "The impact of short-term inventory adjustments, primarily in Asia, clearly impacted our GSM power amplifier business in the September quarter. During the quarter, we were able to partially offset this weakness by growing our GSM/GPRS/EDGE market share at the world's two largest handset original equipment manufacturers."
