South Korea-based manufacturers of LCD equipment feel threatened by the growing industry in China. However, the move of manufacturers to transfer their mass production to China is not hampering the South Korean makers to improve production capacity.

In 2003, BOE Hydis Technology Co. Ltd was formed with an investment worth $380 million. The company is a new entrant to the 5G LCD race in the Beijing Economic and Technology Development Zone. BOE is set to start volume production early next year.

South Korean LCD makers such as Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd and LG.Philips LCD Co. Ltd are convinced that this transfer is an indication that product concentration is moving toward mainland China. However, the companies are optimistic that they still have the edge in terms of R&D.
