Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. will introduce a compact version of PlayStation 2 in November that supports the Blu-ray Disc format.

The global release of the next-generation PlayStation is scheduled May 2005 at the E3 2005 exhibition in Los Angeles.

The new version of PlayStation 2, dubbed as SCPH-700xx, is about the size of a hard-cover book and weighs 900 grams, almost about a quarter in size and a half in weight of the present PlayStation 2.

The drastic downsizing stems from the redesign of the entire system, reducing the number of components through chip integration and removal of the power supply module and adding an external AC power adaptor. The original PlayStation 2 used a built-in power supply module. Also, the new PS2 does not have a hard disk drive.

Starting at 0.25?m, process technology for the core PlayStation 2, Emotion Engine (EE) and Graphic Synthesizer (GS) chips has migrated to 0.18 and eventually 0.13?m. A 90nm process was used to integrate two chips to one.

The new PlayStation 2's flexible design means it can use either two 0.13?m process chips or an integrated EE+GS@90 chip. The EE and GS chips have been used in other Sony products like flat TV sets to provide a PlayStation 2-like graphic user interface called Media Cross Bar.
