Tundra weighs in with host bridge for Freescale's upcoming processors

Tundra Semiconductor Corp. expects by early next year to have available a PowerPC-to-PCI-X host bridge that supports DDR2-400 SDRAM Gbit Ethernet and flash for the PowerPC processor MPC7448 announced Tuesday (Sept. 28) by Freescale Semiconductor.

The announcement came during Freescale's European Smart Network Development Conference in Germany.

Dubbed the Tsi810, the host bridge is configurable in PCI or PCI-X mode at up to 133MHz operation. This part was designed together with Freescale and IBM to keep system costs low, according to Richard O'Connor, CTO at Tundra, and will be made on a 0.18?m CMOS process at Taiwan Semiconductor Mfg Co. Ltd.

The device is based on an advanced Switch Fabric architecture which uses concurrency, multithreading and efficient buffering techniques to give the Tsi108 its high throughput and low latency.

The part also has an integrated clock generator with spread spectrum capabilities, a print engine interface and internal arbiter. All are targeted at reducing device and system costs.

O'Connor said future Tundra host bridges will support DDR2 SDRAMs, because of major advantages in manufacturability, lower I/O voltage and smaller package size and on-die termination.

Tundra also revealed plans to develop a serial RapidIO switch that will be designed into customers' equipment early next year.

Jim Parisien, product manager for third party programs at Tundra, said he expects the switch to be the first commercially available with Serial RapidIO and that it will be used widely in equipment for both wireless and wireline communications equipment.
