Asahi Kasei Microsystems Co. Ltd (AKM) has developed a single-chip 24bit audio CODEC that is a suitable single-chip solution for AV amplifiers and DVD receivers in multi-channel audio applications including Dolby Digital (AC-3), DTS, MPEG and AAC.

The new AK4589 chip features 2-channel A/D, and an 8-channel 114dB differential output D/A compatible with 192kHz sampling. The built-in digital volume control and 192kHz-compatible 8-input/2-output DIR/DIT make it an ideal option for today's demanding audiophiles.

As an upgraded version of the AK4588, the AK4589 delivers an 8dB improvement in performance. According to AKM, this has been achieved by reconfiguring each DAC analog output from single-end to a low distortion differential output, achieving a DR, S/N of 114dB. The AK4589 is software compatible with the AK4588 and, except for the analog output pins, the pin assignments are also compatible.

The CODEC and DIT/DIR sections of the AK4589 operate independently and support the latest DTS96/24 format. The DIR, which enables eight-channel input selection, can be interfaced with a variety of digital AV devices via functions that detect non-PCM data. The DAC's built-in channel-independent digital volumes enable multi-channel signal balancing. Additionally, the AK4589's audio interface is also TDM-system compatible, simplifying DSP interfacing.

The AK4589 is housed in an 80-pin LQFP package. Evaluation boards and samples are also available.
