After opening its new backend plant and R&D center in Suzhou, German chip maker Infineon Technologies AG still plans to expand production in the region. Infineon Asia-Pacific President Loh Kin Wah says, "China is a very important growth market, and we have to be extremely aggressive [here]."

Infineon will invest $241.1 million in the new facility over the next five years and Infineon Technologies (Wuxi) Co. Ltd will invest $91.6 million. Peter Bauer, Infineon's EVP and chief of sales and marketing, says that low labor costs, a sound investment environment and a huge customer base are the reasons why the company decided to expand despite protests from trade unions in Germany that more Germans may be laid off. "[Mainland] China is becoming a leading market for semiconductor manufacturers, given the growth of the country's PC industry at an astonishing rate, about 10 percent per year," he adds.

Infineon is looking forward to making a place in the top four chip makers in China within the next five years.
