Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) released a 20A, wide-input (18V to 60V), isolated dc-dc plug-in power module with Auto-Track sequencing technology. This new highly efficient module simultaneously powers up with any downstream, non-isolated, Auto-Track compliant point-of-load module.

TI said the PTB78520W provides greater design flexibility to 24V and -48V telecom and computing distributed power systems, including complex digital systems requiring power sequencing of multiple power supply rails. Achieving power conversion efficiency up to 90 percent, the product provides two high-current outputs that are both regulated to the same output voltage. The first output incorporates softstart and a remote on/off control. The second output is switched, which allows the user to control the output voltage with the Auto-Track function. The switched output tracks the voltage present at the Track I/O pin.

Rated for operation between the -40C to 85C temperature range, the power module features differential remote sense, over-current and output over-voltage protection, and 1,500Vdc I/O isolation. Its switched output design is suitable for applications requiring simultaneous power up of non-isolated point-of-load (POL) modules, such as TI's PTH series of POLA plug-in modules. Additionally, the switched design eliminates the need for extra FETs and control circuits for sequencing a 3.3V intermediate bus.

The PTB78520W comes in a horizontal through-hole or surface-mount package that measures 36.8-by-56.3-by-12.5mm. Pricing per module in quantities of 1,000 is $62. Pb-free and RoHS-compatible versions will be available in the fourth quarter of 2005. Application notes, reference designs and TI's new Power Management Selection Guide are available online.
