Qualcomm Inc. has signed a definitive agreement to acquire semiconductor design services company Spike Technologies Inc. for $19 million in an effort to support increasing demand for 3G CDMA wireless devices.

By acquiring Spike Technologies, founded in 1994 by Nikhil Modi and Pradeep Vajram, San Diego-based Qualcomm would gain engineering expertise in physical design for deep-submicron process technologies, circuit development and design and verification for presilicon design debug and analysis.

Qualcomm expects Spike to help it address faster time-to-market demands for more feature-rich wireless 3G CDMA devices employing 90nm and below process technologies.

"Spike Technologies brings additional semiconductor chip design and development and software expertise to Qualcomm, and will strongly complement the ongoing work our existing hardware and software engineering teams provide around the world," said Sanjay Jha, executive vice president of Qualcomm and president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies, in a statement.

As part of the acquisition, Qualcomm would take over Spike Technologies' design center in Bangalore, India.

Qualcomm's acquisition of Spike was the second announced by the company this month.

Earlier, Qualcomm said it would acquire Iridigm Display for $170 million to meet market demand for mobile color phone displays.
