Intel Corp. announced new software tools to help developers design, analyze and optimize applications running on Intel-based platforms supporting its Extended Memory 64 Technology (EM64T). Presently, the company already offers similar products for its Intel Itanium 2 processor family.

The new software products with support for EM64T, which allows computing platforms to access larger amounts of memory, include the Compilers, Integrated Performance Primitives, VTune Performance Analyzers and Math Kernel Library. These tools support Windows and Linux OSes, and can be used with both Intel Xeon and Pentium 4 processor-based servers and workstations.

Additionally, the new tools can be used for future Intel-based PCs that support Intel EM64T. Intel plans to introduce this technology in its desktop processor line when commensurate OS support is available.

"Developers understand that turning 32bit code into 64bit code is not easy, regardless of whether an Intel platform or a competitive component is being used," said Jonathan Khazam, the company's GM for its Software Products Division. "Intel offers software developers the expertise and tools for Intel EM64T to make the job easier and application performance remarkably better."

Intel also included additional new features in the v8.1 of its compilers, providing a boost in application performance across a variety of benchmarks. Intel C++ Compiler for Linux, v8.1, includes the Eclipse integrated development environment (IDE) and the C Developers Toolkit for use with the company's 32bit C++ compiler.

Intel also enhanced its Code Coverage Tool and Test Prioritization Tool to speed application testing. Additionally, the threading and thread-support capabilities of its Compilers were also improved to help developers build multi-threaded applications that take advantage of Hyper-Threading Technology.
