Rohm design platform based on CoWare ConvergenSC

Rohm Co. Ltd has developed a corporation-wide design platform named Real Platform based on CoWare Inc.'s ConvergenSC, a System C-based SoC design environment for electronic system-level (ESL) design.

Rohm integrated its own configurable processors and IP core libraries with the ConvergenSC tool in Real Platform. It said it expects that SoC design times can be shortened by one-fifth to about two months.

Rohm's design environment is based on register transfer level (RTL), but it expects to switch its design environment from conventional RTL to the new platform.

Japanese companies are aggressively shifting to SystemC- based design as digital consumer products and mobile phones employ more processors, and software design requirements grow. The conventional RTL design environment is not suitable for the swelling software design workload, according to Jan Goodsell, president of CoWare K.K., the Japan unit of CoWare Inc.

"Rohm decided to switch its design platform as a whole company and decided to give training for the new platform to all engineers," said Goodsell.

CoWare is a supplier of system-level electronic design automation software tools and services. It has more than 70 customers, and estimates that it has about 60 percent share in the ESL market based on Gartner's reported ESL market size.

Rohm intends to use the ConvergenSC products for the design of applications such as image processing, mobile phones and storage applications.
