WEC ISP LSI suits camera modules in mobile phones

Mobile phones equipped with cameras have steadily gained a niche in the consumer electronics market, competing with low end digital still cameras. For mega pixel application, CCD used to be the major image sensor but CMOS image sensor has been replacing CCD due to the recent outstanding improvement for lower noise, higher sensitivity and better quality of pictures, Winbond Electronics Corp. (WEC) said.

To get a larger share of the market, the company has developed a highly advanced Image Signal Processor (ISP) LSI for 1.3 megapixel (MP) to 3MP camera modules in mobile phones.

Providing high picture quality and lower power consumption, the new W99712 enables high level image signal processing avoiding the heavier task given to the application/base band LSI and easier control of auto focusing, optical zooming and mechanical shutter driving. It also makes possible for users to minimize the software development work for the host LSI. When this product is combined with a mega-pixel CMOS image sensor, the company shared, less expensive and higher performance of camera module can be implemented.

Featuring high-speed processing with hardware, the device has a high-performance image processing engine exclusive for AE, AF, AWB and other image processing; superior throughput to process 1 pixel/clock from the CMOS sensor, by accordingly configuring the line memory for each block; and reduction in internal clock frequency and power consumption due to the built-in exclusive hardware and no frame memory usage.

Additionally, the W99712 comes with a built-in 8bit microprocessor, three general purpose output-only ports, and 16 bi-directional general purpose IO ports in which each port is independently controllable from the firmware. Eight of the ports deliver a powerful 24mA drive power to drive the stepping motor.

Power source is between 1.5V and 1.8V core voltage and 2.8V to 3.3V IO voltage, and current is typically 50mA, with maximum 135mA in normal mode.

The W99712 will be available for samples this month, with mass production scheduled for 1Q 2005.
