Open Solution Inc., a Korean fabless semiconductor startup, is sampling a digital audio processor designed for use in wireless applications. The company is also developing a digital processor for wireless video as well.

Open Solution (Seoul) is shipping the DWM3100, a hard-wired digital audio processor that is said to provide wireless transmission of "crystal clear" CD quality sound. Applications include wireless headphones, headsets and other products, according to the company.

To date, wireless audio has been lackluster at best. But the new device from the company is said to provide "near lossless" 4:1 audio compression/decompression for CD quality sound, Open Solution said.

The product is basically an audio and data transceiver IC. When the device operates in audio mode, the transmitter compresses any sampled stereo (two-channel) audio data into a serial data stream. For enhanced Quality of Service (QOS), the DWM3100 supports a proprietary retransmission method for error correction.

The DWM3100 has three RF transceiver control modes: fixed, frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) and advanced adaptive frequency selection. The data frames are modulated to RF by a standard 2.4GHz radio transceiver and sent to the receiver.

Open Solution is also working on the DWM4xxx family of parts, which are geared for wireless video.
