Touted to be the lowest supply current, dual power mode operational amplifier available on the market, the LMV422 from National Semiconductor Corp. features a unique power-saving mode that allows customers to reduce power consumption while maintaining an active circuit. According to National this allows for faster turn-on times in smoke detectors and other sensor interface applications where reaction time is critical.

"National's LMV422 is high-performance analog in action," shared Erroll Dietz, VP of National's Amplifier product group. "National has developed leading-edge technology where it matters most to customersin low-power embedded systems where active circuits can be easily set from a low-power mode to a high-power mode, conserving battery life while keeping the circuit active."

Two power mode selection

The new dual rail-to-rail output amplifier offers a power select pin (PS) that allows the user to select one of two power modes depending on the level of performance desired. This is ideal for AC coupled circuits where the circuit needs to be kept active to maintain a quiescent charge on the coupling capacitors with minimum power consumption.

With an external control pin, the LMV422 can be switched between a very low-power (2?A per channel) and low-bandwidth (27KHz) mode to a full-power (400?A per channel) wide-bandwidth (8MHz) mode. These combinations reduce power consumption, maintain necessary charges on the coupling capacitors and shorten the time needed to stabilize the signal after switching from low-power to high-power mode, National said. Additionally, the input bias of the device is 5pA, and has a supply voltage range of 2.7V to 5V and a common mode rejection ratio of 85dB.

Priced at $1.20 in 1,000-unit quantities, the LMV422 is available in 10-pin mini SOIC packaging. For more information, visit National's website.
