Omron IR thermosensor provides accurate measurement

Omron Corp. introduced a new infrared (IR) thermosensor that provides an accurate, highly stable and cost-effective way to measure the temperature of objects.

The new ES1B works by producing an output signal (in mV) that is proportional to the temperature of the object, just like a standard thermocouple. However, unlike standard thermocouples, the company stressed, the ES1B does not need contact with the object whose temperature it measures.

According to Omron, this makes it particularly suitable for the food manufacturing industry since it does not come into contact with the food, making it very hygienic.

Avoids usual wear and tear

The product's silicon-based cable and IP65 protection enables it to be resistant to dust and water. Additionally, since the ES1B is contact-less with the objects it measures, it is not affected by the usual wear and tear.

The new IR thermosensor behaves just like a standard K type thermocouple, which enables it to operate with any temperature controller or alarm unit. Four models are available, each being calibrated for a specific temperature range (10C-70C, 60C-120C, 115C-165C and 140C-260C) to cover most application requirements.

Each thermosensor is designed to give reproducibility to within 1 percent of its range. Since it is an active sensor, the ES1B is more sensitive than passive IR sensors, making it possible to be mounted up to 40 percent further away from the measured object to generate the same output, the company said.

Once the ES1B and instrument combination is calibrated, the reproducible signal is always available and provides not only stable, real time temperature measurement but also reduces downtime of the machine.

The ES1B can also be used with proximity sensors to indicate when to measure the temperature of moving objects on an assembly line, with panel indicators to identify an alarm condition, and with temperature controllers to control the temperature of a moving object.
