Micron image sensor with TrueSNAP technology

Micron Technology Inc. announced commercial sampling of its new MT9V022 DigitalClarity high speed, wide-VGA high-performance image sensor featuring its proprietary TrueSNAP (Shutter Node Active Pixel) global shutter technology.

Designed for the automotive sector, the new sensor features a global shutter (simultaneous total-pixel exposure system), enhanced near infrared (NIR) sensitivity (greater than 40 percent QE at 850nm), and high dynamic range (>110dB). According to Micron, the MT9V022 is a true single-source solution targeted for the scene understanding needs "both interior and exterior" of the automotive industry and other low-cost embedded scene processing applications.

The 1/3-inch monochrome (or color) low-power wide-VGA image sensor features an active pixel array format of 752 x 480 pixel designed to capture a letter-box image. The 6.0?m x 6.0?m pixels feature an advanced programmable piece wise linear architecture, enabling high dynamic range which simultaneously captures useable information in both bright sunlight and shadowed regions.

The MT9V022 performs at 60fps at full resolution for stop-motion image-capture (up to 200fps at lower resolutions) with the flexibility of either 10bit or 8bit parallel or serial LVDS data output. It also features on-chip timing, two-wire serial programmable interface, automatic gain and exposure control, and auto black level calibration. Its exclusive TrueSNAP technology prevents image tearing and enables true synchronized IR illumination for in-the-dark image capture. It has an extended operating temperature range of from -40C to 85C, and the dark current measurement rates only 10 percent saturated signal at 85C. Power consumption is <200mW at maximum data rate.

"The requirements for an automotive imaging device are extreme," shared Curtis Stith, Director of Micron's Emerging Markets group. "A sensor needs to be able to function in severe heat or freezing cold, in darkness or direct sunlight, and under rapidly changing conditions. It has to function at high speed and capture, read and transmit reliable information instantaneously."

"We've collected design requirements from some of the world's leading engineers who are designing sophisticated equipment to enhance the driving experience and protect vehicle occupants. Equipped with that knowledge, we've strived to create a single imaging sensor delivering the market's most robust feature-set," Stith added.

Offered in a 52-pin IBGA package, typical applications for the MT9V022 include lane departure warning and guidance products, driver drowsiness detection systems, occupant sensing equipment for passenger and driver, "smart air-bag" deployment, blind spot detection cameras (front, back and side systems), and general security and driver convenience.
