Embedded software extended for managing network congestion

Embedded software specialist U4EA Technologies has started licensing the latest version of its GoS 2.0 technology for managing network congestion and which guarantees quality of service (QoS).

The software provides a means for network access and edge original equipment manufacturers such as Ericsson to quickly integrate major advances in service assurance and service level agreement for converged applications on multi-service networks.

The company has worked closely with Ericsson on a version of the software targeted at VoIP, having acquired a Fremont, California-based development group from the Swedish telecoms group.

Ericsson was seeking a dynamic QoS solution to enable management of multiple IP services across a single access network. U4EA's GoS 2.0 technology has now been incorporated into Ericsson's HL950 multi-service access device, and this is undergoing trials at several US and European carriers.

U4EA was formed in 1999 to commercialize the QoS technology developed by researchers at the University of Bristol, work that was partly funded by the European Union. The privately owned and backed company now employs 35 people at sites in Bristol, England and Fremont, California, and also runs a test centre in Nice, France.

"We have been really successful as the network device OEMs are catching the VoIP wave and so far our best contracts have come from the wireline sector, but we feel our biggest opportunity going forward will come from wireless operators, and especially as operators move towards fixed/mobile convergence", said Columb Harrington, U4EA's chief executive officer.

Harrington says the company is recruiting more designers as the opportunities increase and operators look to ensure better congestion management of their converged networks.

On the wireless side, the company is working on next generation systems for multimedia to the home, and on a project dubbed ROAM4G for transport of scalably-coded multimedia over IP networks, with partners such as Toshiba, ST Microelectronics, Thales and QinteQ.

The company has been working for a long time with Analog Devices to provide the hardened embedded SIP and QoS components. The company's software provides a simple and effective means of sharing limited bandwidth and guaranteeing QoS levels. It protects against unreliable application performance due to packet overload and efficiently prioritizes network traffic according to its sensitivity to loss and delay.

The software protects, prioritizes and maximizes the number of real-time SIP sessions that can be delivered and carried, and improves the overall efficiency of the network. It integrates with SIP components such as application layer gateway (ALG) and SLA monitor that control and monitor SIP sessions between leading SIP proxies, network gateways and SIP devices.

GoS 2.0 is integrated with a software based network device via a simple operating system (OS)-specific interface layer. Interface layers for common OSes are available from U4EA Technologies.

The suite consists of three main modules that link together to provide a complete quality solution. The QoS Processing Core slots into the packet path and provides packet SLA enforcement. The QoS Configurator configures the core architecture according to the customer's preferred quality model. The QoS Monitor supports real-time statistics gathering, charting, report generation and quality predictions for SLA management. All modules can be customized to meet specific customer requirements.

OEMs can also use ready-made packages for the common scenarios of VoIP support, DiffServ compliance or redundant link fail-over.
