LSI Logic Corp. announced OEM sample availability of its LSIFC949X controller IC for embedded applications and LSIFC7204XP-LC Host Bus Adapter (HBA) for high performance server storage environments.

Delivering twice the performance of 2Gbps technology, while maintaining backward compatibility, the LSIFC949X provides end-to-end data protection and is suitable for embedded applications such as RAID storage systems. In addition, this device integrates context memory, which is ideal for cost-effective small to medium sized businesses and Blade server applications. With a "memory-less" build option that reduces overall system costs and real-estate requirements, the LSIFC949X also serves as a cost effective storage area network (SAN) solution for small to medium sized businesses.

"With storage area networks continuing to penetrate the market and the SMB/SME space, it is essential that users have access to cost-effective solutions that ease the migration from 2Gb applications to 4Gb," said Charlie Kraus, director of HBA marketing for LSI Logic's Storage Standard Products division. "As we begin sampling our 4Gb technology, customers can be assured that we are delivering a solution that not only doubles the performance of the current Fiber Channel generation, but also reduces costs and protects previous Fiber Channel investments."

According to the company, the LSIFC949X leverages the Fusion-MPT architecture, which allows compatibility with LSI Logic's complete line of common architecture drivers. Fusion-MPT provides the benefit of complete binary compatibility of host software across different physical interfaces (such as SCSI, Fiber Channel and Serial Attached SCSI). The result is reduced software development, as well as less integration and certification time, for system designers with a critical need to shorten time to market, added the company.

The 4Gbps HBAs built with the LSIFC949X include the single port LSI7104XP HBA, the dual port LSI7204XP HBA and the quad port LSI7404XP, all featuring a PCI-X bus interface. These HBAs support 1-, 2- and 4GBps operations, and deliver the performance needed to move today's data, video and high-bandwidth content. The Fiber Channel HBAs are bundled with the company's MyStorage software, which provides HBA monitoring, load balancing and path failover protection.
