PTC thermistor features small size, resettability

To meet the industry's need for new overcurrent protection devices that offer a smaller size, resettability and high stability, Murata Electronics has introduced its new resettable PTC thermistor chip for automotive applications.

The new PRG21_S1 series, packaged in a small 0805 case size, also protects ICs and power supply units from trouble caused by short circuits. Due to its reset capability, the new devices do not need to be replaced when a fuse blows. It also offers better resistance value stability due to Murata's ceramic technology, as compared to resettable fuses using polymer PTC thermistor technology, according to the company.

Suitable for all circuits with a sensor line or low power line (with current <25mA) that require overcurrent protection, the PRG21_S1 devices may be used in a variety of auto applications, including airbag electronic control units (ECU), remote keyless entry (RKE) receivers, electrical power steering ECUs, engine control ECUs, immobilizers, tire pressure monitoring system receivers and car audio systems. The company says it works best with an operating temperature of less than 105C.

The PRG21_S1 is the first device in the PRG series family that is designed specifically for the automotive market. Available in both 42-ohm and 22-ohm automotive grade versions, the new chip PTC thermistor is priced at 20 cents per unit based on an estimated usage of 10,000 pieces per month.
