Synopsys buys assets of mixed signal IP vendor

Continuing its acquisition streak Synopsys Inc. announced Tuesday (Nov.2) that it has acquired certain assets of mixed-signal intellectual property company LEDA Design for an undisclosed amount.

Phil Dworsky, director of marketing for Synopsys' DesignWare IP, said the acquisition is not a technology but a talent play, as the company gains 80 digital and mixed signal design engineers in Yerevan, Armenia, who will join Synopsys DesignWare IP engineering team.

Dworsky said LEDA was developing mixed signal and library IP but he said memory library IP was "not the focus" of the LEDA acquisition rather it was support for Synopsys standard IP.

"There is great demand for mixed signal IP that compliments our digital IP in areas such as PCI Express, USB, especially the PHY areas," said Dworsky. "This gives us very quickly the ability to expand our delivery capability. We are trying to deliver against the demand we have for those products."

Earlier in the year Synopsys attempted but then backed out of acquiring library vendor Mosys.

When the company backed out of that acquisition, there was industry speculation whether Synopsys would seek other means to get library IP.

The LEDA acquisition is the second IP related acquisition Synopsys has made since it backed out its acquisition of memory vendor Mosys. Synopsys purchased IP vendor Cascade Semiconductor last month and also acquired TCAD company ISE and purchased some of the assets of Monterey Design, most notably that company's design team in Armenia.

LEDA's website says Synopsys did not buy any customer contracts, indicating that the company won't support LEDA's current customer base.

Dworsky said before being acquired LEDA had fulfilled its contracts with customers.
