Ramtron FRAM supports Merlino embedded system board

Ramtron Int. Corp. disclosed that its FM3808 ferroelectric random access memory (FRAM) has been selected by Seventech, an Italian company, for use in Merlino embedded system board.

Seventech has chosen Ramtron's FM3808 for its fast read/write capability, integrated clock and ability to maintain data in memory during power failures. The Merlino board uses FRAM memory to overcome booting problems and recover from system resets due to freezing.

The Merlino board is based on a re-programmable field programmable gate array (FPGA) architecture with a synthesized soft-core processor. It stores system parameters and the status of application programs in FRAM memory. These parameters are preserved in the FRAM memory array during a power loss, enabling the system to be restarted from the exact point at which it was interrupted.

According to Seventech, the Merlino board allows PC hardware to be adapted to applications for which they were not originally designed. Potential end-user applications include gaming machines where vital information requires reliable data storage and fast retrieval.
