ADI, Siworks to develop modem solution for 802.16 WiMAX

Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) and Siworks Inc., a wireless semiconductor IP company, have signed an agreement to develop the physical layer (PHY) of an 802.16 (WIMAX) broadband wireless baseband modem on ADI's TigerSHARC processor. ADI is said to become the first mainstream processor provider to enable an all-software 802.16d WiMAX physical layer without the use of rigid ASICs.

The ADI and Siworks solution is a software-based complete physical layer, initially targeted to the WiMAX OFDM-256 specification. The implementation allows for a seamless upgrade to the complete 802.16d specification and all future amendments. The same architecture can easily be upgraded to the mobility version of the specification, known as IEEE 802.16e.

The TigerSHARC processor's I/O bandwidth (4GBps I/O throughput) enable a scalable implementation, allowing for OEM differentiation through advanced receiver techniques. It is widely held that 802.16 implementations will utilize smart antenna techniques such as space-time coding or adaptive beam-forming, thereby necessitating a flexible and scalable architecture.
