LeCroy library reduces validation time of protocol compliance

LeCroy Corp. announced a new product from its Protocol Solutions Group, which was created last month with the company's acquisition of Computer Access Technology Corp. (CATC).

Available at no additional charge, the new Serial Attached SCSI Compliance Test Suite (CTS) is designed to work with the CATC SASTrainer Serial Attached SCSI bus exerciser. Jointly developed with the University of New Hampshire Interoperability Labs (UNH-IOL) and the Protocol Solutions Group, this library of verification scripts reduces the time required to validate protocol compliance at the link, transport and application layer, the company said.

The CTS software includes specific scripts for testing initiator, target and expander device compliance. The scripts primarily address Serial SCSI Protocol (SSP) behavior, but also include test cases for verifying portions of the Serial ATA Tunneling Protocol (STP) and Serial Management Protocol (SMP).

"This turnkey compliance test suite allows SAS validation groups to hit the ground running," said James Wright, Protocol Solutions Group's director of marketing. "Developers using our SASTrainer can now leverage hundreds of hours of script development and SAS expertise from the UNH-IOL to accelerate their own Serial Attached SCSI test efforts."

The CTS software is organized around specific aspects of device functionality. The test suite addresses portions of the protocol that establish connections, perform discovery, manage arbitration, as well as perform error recovery at the SSP transport layer. The test suite also includes source code that allows developers to adapt this substantial test bed to create custom scripts for their own specific applications.

The SASTrainer is a SAS and SATA compatible bus exerciser option for LeCroy's SASTracer protocol analyzer, touted by the company to be the first 3Gbps analyzer on the market. The exerciser offers initiator and target emulation, a robust scripting API, plus the ability to intelligently respond to different state machines using unlimited IF-THEN-ELSE branching within a script. A flexible and versatile validation tool, the SASTrainer is capable of testing multiple layers of the SAS protocol to help uncover latent problems before a device enters production.

The CTS software will be released next week (Nov. 15). Existing customers can obtain the software at no additional cost under their maintenance agreement.
