RFMD supplies POLARIS transceivers to AT&T Wireless

RF Micro Devices Inc. (RFMD) is shipping volume quantities of its POLARIS TOTAL RADIO solution for use in the recently announced Ogo wireless device from AT&T Wireless. The POLARIS solution is comprised of RFMD's GSM/GPRS POLARIS transceiver and the company's PowerStar power amplifier (PA) module.

RFMD claims the POLARIS transceivers has more than doubled its addressable market in cellular to about $2.5 billion. The company says it is leveraging its position in PA and transceiver portfolio to increase its semiconductor content in handsets and drive incremental revenue growth.

The Ogo which is manufactured by an ODM is now available through AT&T Wireless is pre-installed with instant messaging (IM) software and features text messaging and email capabilities. The device also provides users IXI's Bluetooth-based personal mobile gateway, which facilitates communications between the Ogo and peripherals, such as digital cameras. The Ogo also features a full QWERTY keyboard, a color screen with 16bit graphics and a sleek clamshell design.
