Toshiba Corp. will use the ARM1136J-S processor to develop ASICs for consumer electronics and network systems. The core is said to be capable of executing certain algorithms, such as multimedia processing, up to three times faster than its predecessors.

The agreement includes an option for Toshiba to license other ARM11 family processors, which is suitable for mobile phones, consumer electronics and networking systems. Toshiba has licensed the ARM7, ARM9 and ARM10 family of processors for mobile communications to consumer electronics since 1998.

Hiroyuki Uchimura, managing director, ARM K.K., said, "By having the ARM11 family of high performance, low power processors included in Toshiba's line up of ASICs, ARM will be able to further accelerate industry adoption of the ARM architecture, in key markets like consumer electronics and wireless devices."
