The LCD panel industry has been dominated by manufacturers from both Japan and South Korea since 2002. Analysts expect that the two countries would still continue their industry hold up to next year, with an estimated average share of 66 percent in the global market, which is roughly 3.47 million units.

Nevertheless, makers from mainland China and Taiwan are catching up with these industry leaders, with an anticipated doubled output rate by year-end.

In the first half of this year, Taiwan-based makers, including AU Optronics Corp., Chi Mei Optoelectronics, Chunghwa Picture Tubes and HannStar Display Corp. held a 24 percent share in the overall global shipments with 1.3 million units.

Meanwhile, panel makers from mainland China, such as BOE Technology Group Co. Ltd, shanghai sva nec liquid crystal display Co. Ltd and Jilin Caijing Digital Hi Tech Panels Ltd, continue to expand their capacities with larger production lines.
