Attempting to keep up with its rivals, Infineon Technologies AG has announced it would set up a corporate software group in India, where the semiconductor supplier already has a research and development center.

According to Infineon, the group will be responsible for software strategy, execution and ensuring all global governance functions such as quality assurance and quality standards, internal Infineon software processes, the selection and support of partners, and the software portfolio.

Infineon's software group will focus on wireless communications (handset and infrastructure), wireline communications and automotive industry. The group is now developing low-level drivers and protocols, and integrating them with hardware, firmware and device drivers in order to enable Infineon to deliver complete reference designs.

While Infineon is emphatic that its Indian center will play a pivotal role in the company's future, the company will have to compete with better-known companies such as Intel and Texas Instruments to recruit qualified engineering talent.

Other German companies, such as Siemens AG and Robert Bosch have also announced plans to expand in India.

Santanagopalan Surya will head the company's corporate software group and also serve as managing director of Infineon Technologies India Pvt. Ltd. Thomas Simonis will head Infineon's business operations in India.
