Tyco cabling solution supports 10G Ethernet to 100m

Tyco Electronics recently introduced its AMP NETCONNECT XG copper cabling system solution for 10GbE applications.

The twisted-pair system consists of shielded cable, connectors and patch panel designs that overcome Alien Crosstalk (ANEXT) to fully support the proposed 10GBASE-T standard and enable 10GE transmission over a full 100m channel.

The 10GBASE-T standard (IEEE 802.3an), currently under development, is targeting an operating frequency of 500MHz, Tyco explained. At this frequency, the signal integrity on existing unshielded (UTP) cabling systems is adversely affected by ANEXT. Because today's active network equipment cannot cancel ANEXT, the distances that TIA/EIA-568-B standard compliant UTP can support 10GBASE-T are greatly reduced, the company added.

"According to Shannon's Law, which defines the maximum amount of data transmitted in the presence of noise, existing Category 6 UTP will likely be limited to channel lengths of less than 100m for 10GbE," said Bob Zahr, RCDD/LAN specialist and systems engineering manager for Tyco. "Today's standards-based network designs demand media that can support the full 100m distance for horizontal channels. For those looking for 10G capacity over a copper system, the AMP NETCONNECT XG Copper Cabling System is a proven solution that does just that."

The press release states that the new system incorporates a foil shielding that virtually eliminates ANEXT, resulting in a signal-to-noise ratio proven to support 10G Ethernet data rates to 100m. It has been tested to 625MHz in worst-case scenario installations and has demonstrated a Shannon Capacity of >19Gbps.

The AMP NETCONNECT XG Copper System consists of Category 6 (ISO Class E) shielded cable, RJ-45 jacks, SL 110Connect jacks and 24-port RJ-45 patch panels, and can be utilized with the AMP NETCONNECT AMPTRAC Connectivity Management System for intelligent networks.
