NEC Electronics' NEC Engineering group is working with Norwegian company Chipcon on a Zigbee module that incorporates an 8bit flash microcontroller from NEC and the cc2420 rf transceiver from Chipcon.

Development kits incorporating two Zigbee-ready modules and software development tools are scheduled to be shipping by next February, and available from local NEC companies.

Chipcon launched its 2420 development platform, including hardware, the Zigbee protocol stack as well as development tools this September for prototyping, evaluation and as a demonstration platform.

Last week at Electronica the company said it is developing an SoC device for Zigbee applications that will be ready in the early part of next year.

The wireless module is controlled by NEC Electronics' 78K0/KF1+ 8bit single chip flash microcontroller, in which is embedded the IEEE 802.15.4-compliant MAC software. The module supports flash programming and debugging of the 78K0 microcontroller via USB connection to PC, without any additional requirement of hardware.
