Raychem Circuit Protection, a business unit of Tyco Electronics, released a new series of electronic chip fuses for laptops, multimedia devices, cellphones and other portable electronics.

According to the press release, the fast-acting fuses help provide overcurrent protection on systems using DC power sources of up to 125Vac, and help facilitate the development of more reliable, high-performance consumer electronics.

Available in industry standard 0402, 0603 and 1206 chip sizes, the surface-mount fuse line offers small size, high reliability, strong arc suppression characteristics and "the highest current ratings available in both 0402 and 0603 form factors." The device features clear time characteristics of 4h (min) at 100 percent of rated current, 5s (max) at 250 percent of rated current, and 0.05s (max) at 400 percent of rated current.

The fuse's monolithic, multilayer design provides the highest hold current in the smallest footprint, reduces diffusion-related aging, improves product reliability and resilience, and enhances high temperature performance in a wide range of circuit protection designs, the company said.

Adrian Mikolajczak, Raychem marketing manager, commented, "We believe these to be the most technically advanced fuses currently available to circuit designers, and are convinced that they will help us deliver more comprehensive, one-stop circuit protection solutions to our customers worldwide."

The fuses are available on 178mm reel for compatibility with high-volume assembly, and are UL recognized. These RoHS-compliant devices are designed for operating between the -55C to 125C temperature range, and can withstand soldering temperatures of up to 260C for 60s (max).
