Anadigics Inc. launched a dual-band 4-by-4mm indium gallium phosphide heterojunction bipolar transistor (InGaP HBT) power amplifier (PA) that supports the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, allowing WLAN equipment manufacturers to use a single PA for 802.11b, 802.11a, 802.11g, 802.11a/b, and 802.11a/b/g applications.

According to the company, the small footprint AWL6950 is the industry's most highly-integrated dual-band PA, requiring only two external capacitors, which significantly reduces PCB space requirements. "The AWL6950 offers the industry's best dual-band PA performance and reliability, while providing the highest level of integration to reduce PCB space and external component costs," added Ron Michels, VP of Broadband Products at Anadigics.

The new PA provides a low error vector magnitude (EVM) of 3.5 percent at 20dBm in the 2.4GHz band and 19dBm in the 5GHz band. It exhibits 31.5dB of linear power gain at 2.4GHz and 30dB of linear power gain at 5GHz. In addition, the AWL6950 represents superior ruggedness by exhibiting consistent gain and linearity performance across a wide range of temperatures and voltages, the press release said. This PA offers best-in-class electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection of >1KV ensuring robustness in the world's toughest manufacturing environments, Anadigics added.

Unlike other WLAN PAs, the company stressed, the AWL6950 has an integrated CMOS-voltage compatible on/off circuit for each band of operation, eliminating the need for any additional on/off circuitry around the device. The product also integrates temperature- and voltage-compensated output power detectors, and complies with the European Union's Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) standard.

The AWL6950 is priced at $2 each in quantities of 100,000 units. Samples are already available.
