Motorola has opened its 3G R&D center in Singapore. The center will focus on the R&D of 3G handsets for regional and global markets. In line with the strategic partnership between the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and Motorola, an initial batch of 28 engineers will be sent to Motorola's 3G R&D center in the U.S. for advanced training.

The 3G R&D center is said to be a significant part of Motorola's efforts to make Singapore a strategic hub for higher value-add activities and put Singapore at the forefront of 3G technology and innovation. Singapore is already the main site for the manufacturing of the company's 3G handsets globally.

Bill Werner, SVP and general manager of Motorola's personal communications sector for 3G, commented, "Singapore plays a significant role in our global 3G development. The manufacturing center in Singapore currently manufactures 60 percent of Motorola's global output of 3G phones. With the addition of the 3G R&D Center, Motorola Singapore completes the 3G value chain of design, development and manufacturing on the 3G front."
